The 16th century Grammar School which stands near the parish church still has a desk used by Clive and carved with his initials. The market, held on Wednesdays and Saturdays are worth visiting for the local produce on sale, much of it local specialities. Damson trees surround the town and the produce from them is turned into jam, damson cheese (a relish), lamb and damson pie and damson gin. Market Drayton is known as the gingerbread capital of the world. Dunked in port, it is said to have curiously restorative powers. Take a stroll along the Tern or the canal, where you will be amazed by the number of cows you find, some 15000 of them, making yoghurts and quiches for Muller Dairy and Palethorps.
