A little bit of interesting facts on Wem

Wem has numerous small speciality shops stocked to the gunnels and bursting with delights. An old fashioned iron mongers that sells everything! Wem also has one of Shropshire's best delicatessen and that's a recommendation in itself.

Virtually demolished during the Civil War in 1643 when 5000 Royalists descended upon the town, the womenfolk of Wem rallied round to defeat Lord Capel and his cavaliers.

Wem is now a warm and welcoming town and home to Mythstories Museum, the only museum in the Country dedicated to the art of storytelling. Enter this enchanting world and let Shropshire’s myths and legends come to life.

Home of the modern Sweet Pea, the town’s annual Sweet Pea Show takes place in July. A riot of colour to delight the eye and tickle the nostril, it is not to be missed. First grown by the 18th century nurseryman Henry Eckford, the achievement of this humble son of Shropshire is still celebrated to this day.

Round off your visit to Wem with a stop at the ‘Treacle Mine’. A truly traditional sweet shop overflowing with goodies. Remember gobstoppers, pear drops and nut brittle?

Nearby are Hodnet Hall Gardens and Hawkstone Park Follies an historic grade 1 listed landscape.
